Mountain Bike Hire

Mountain Bike

The trail is currently closed between Opua and Long Bridge (Kawakawa) to allow reinstatement of the railway tracks.

Mountain Bike Hire

All our mountain bikes are “Merida” brand and are all 2021 models. The brand, styles and features of the bikes have been specifically chosen for bike hire on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail.

We highly recommend advance bookings, especially in peak periods. We can also transport* hire bikes to other parts of the trail.
Child Bikes
We have a range of smaller size bikes (20″ and 24″ wheels) which are available for children.  In addition we also have a selection of child seats.
Available from  KawakawaKaikohe
You can pick up a bike from either location between 9am and 2pm

Mullarkey Bike & Shuttle have offices in Kawakawa and Kaikohe. Both sites offer Mountain Bike hire & E-Bike hire plus shuttle services to the key pickup/drop off points along the trail (Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Okaihau, Horeke).

The section of trail between Opua and Kawakawa will be closed for engineering work until late 2022. Therefore, Opua will still be available as both a pickup and drop-off point but you will not be able to start or finish riding there until the trail completely reopens.

Bike hire prices are $75 per day for a Mountain Bike and $135 per day  for an E-bike.

All our bikes are 2021 models which have been serviced in our Workshop after every hire.

Depending on which direction you cycle the trail, your journey will take in the following places of interest:

Kawakawa, often referred to as the “railway town” famous for the rail line running down the middle of the main street, and home of the world famous Hundertwasser Toilets.

From Kawakawa you then head to Kaikohe passing through pine forests and farms, taking in the beautiful suspension bridge at Tuhipa.

The trail onward from Kaikohe takes you to Okaihau via the shores of Lake Omapre. Northland’s longest lake and an area of great importance in local Māori culture.

The final section of the trail from Okaihau to Horeke, sees cyclists riding through the valley alongside the Utakura River. This is arguably the most scenic part of the trail.

We operate a flexible transport and shuttle service including luggage transfer. We can transport you, your bikes/luggage, to and from any accessible point on the cycle trail.

Please call us on 0800 891340 to discuss with our team your plans for riding the trail. We are keen to help you have the best experience possible.

We also offer an emergency pick up service in the event of a breakdown.

We are based at both Kawakawa which is the new eastern start point of the trail, and Kaikohe which is the mid-point of the trail. (see our locations on Google Maps)

We have vehicles available with the ability to transport up to 17 bikes.

The trail is “one way” but it can be ridden in either direction or started at any point you choose. Based on experience most cyclists start at either Horeke or Kawakawa and stay one night in Kaikohe which is the halfway point on the trail.

Or alternatively some clients prefer to base themselves in Kaikohe and ride the trail in either direction. The advantage of this approach is that both sections are in the main downhill.

Because each journey is very individual with different start/finish points and number of riders involved we find it more accurate to quote prices individually.
